December 27, 2024UK Cheerleading Team Unity Allstars Black Aim for Historic Third World Title
December 27, 2024A team of cheerleaders from North Yorkshire is celebrating an incredible victory after competing in the prestigious All Star World Championships in Florida.
The East Coast Tigers senior squad, hailing from Eastfield near Scarborough, clinched the Senior Level 1 title during last weekend’s competition. This marked a monumental achievement for the team as it was their first-ever international appearance.
Both junior and senior teams represented the East Coast Tigers on this global stage. The junior squad, comprising athletes aged 12 to 14, and the senior team, featuring members aged 12 to 18, collectively raised an impressive £25,000 to fund their journey to the United States.
Despite not making it to the final stage, the junior team delivered an outstanding performance in what coach Jess Mortimer described as a “tough division.” Speaking to BBC Radio York, Ms. Mortimer, who could not attend due to her pregnancy, shared her pride in the young athletes:
“For these 24 cheerleaders to even compete at an international level felt like a victory. The juniors put on an incredible routine, but the competition out there is just so fierce.”
The senior team, however, soared to success, supported enthusiastically by their junior teammates and coaches Liv Hall and Chelsea Baxter. The championship required teams to perform a high-energy, two-and-a-half-minute routine, complete with gravity-defying stunts like a “flyer” being tossed into the air.
Coach Mortimer recounted the emotional moment when the senior team was declared world champions:
“We always train them to believe they can win, but when they heard their name called, their expressions showed pure disbelief. There were tears of joy—it was heartwarming to see how grateful and overwhelmed they were.”
This victory highlights the dedication, teamwork, and passion of the East Coast Tigers, making it a memory they’ll cherish forever.
