January 1, 2025A talented group of cheerleaders from Derby is preparing to compete in what they describe as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity—the Allstar World Cheerleading Championship in Florida this April.
The 16-member squad, representing DB Cheer in Sinfin, includes athletes aged 16 to 26. With an intensive training schedule during the half-term break, the team is determined to make their mark on this global stage.
Earning a Spot on the World Stage
The team’s founder, Charlotte Astle, called the invitation to the championship “an absolutely unreal” moment.
“This is a dream come true,” she shared. “Teams across the country work tirelessly for an opportunity like this, and we’re so proud to have been invited.”
The team secured their spot after winning a competition in Loughborough last year, where they were awarded a “wildcard” place in the championship. Charlotte recounted the excitement:
“When the announcement was made, we all looked at each other in disbelief before breaking into cheers and jumping for joy. It was a surreal moment—we never imagined this would happen to us.”
Unique Categories to Showcase Their Skills
The Derby squad will compete in two distinct categories at the championship: lyrical and pom.
Squad member Luciana Fois, 22, explained the differences: “Pom is fast-paced and highly energetic, while lyrical focuses on the emotional and artistic side of performance. It’s like contemporary ballet, but with a cheer twist.”
Grace Backhouse, 18, highlighted the camaraderie and dedication of the team: “We’ve trained together for nearly 11 years. This is more than just a competition; it’s a chance to put Derby on the map.”
For 25-year-old Clara Rowroch, the experience is monumental: “This will be the biggest competition we’ve ever been part of. It’s going to be incredible.”
A Bright Future for Derby Cheerleading
With their enthusiasm, talent, and teamwork, DB Cheer is ready to represent Derby on a global stage. As they prepare to head to Orlando, Florida, the team embodies the spirit of determination and pride that makes cheerleading so inspiring.
