TAICHUNG, TAIWAN – The Classic Girls cheerleading team stole the spotlight during the World Baseball Classic (WBC) Pool A games at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, drawing as much attention as the players themselves.
Comprising 21 cheerleaders selected from Taiwan’s professional baseball teams, the Classic Girls team brought an exciting energy to the stadium, performing on stages in the infield stands instead of the traditional outfield seats. This close proximity to the crowd allowed for easy fan interaction, with many cheerleaders boasting over 1.5 million Instagram followers, further adding to their widespread appeal.
Unlike Japan, where cheerleaders are often positioned further away from the crowd, Taiwan’s cheerleading teams have redefined the fan experience by performing where they can be photographed and cheered on by thousands of spectators.
The increased visibility and engagement with fans have played a significant role in boosting baseball’s popularity in Taiwan. Once struggling with an average attendance of just 2,650 spectators in the early 2000s, Taiwan’s professional baseball games have seen a surge, with current averages reaching approximately 5,100 fans per game.
The WBC games saw an overwhelming response, with all 80,000 tickets for Taiwan’s group-stage games selling out.
A fan in his 20s attending the game shared, “I came here to enjoy both the game and the cheerleaders’ performances,” highlighting how the Classic Girls are becoming an integral part of the game-day experience.
Their dynamic routines and fan-friendly approach have contributed significantly to the revival of Taiwan’s baseball scene, making the Classic Girls an iconic part of the WBC.
