Beloit Turner cheerleading has proven its strength and determination by qualifying for the WACPC Cheer State Championships for the third consecutive year. Under the leadership of head coach Kayla McLain, the team has evolved from humble beginnings to a state powerhouse over the past eight seasons. With impressive performances and advanced stunting skills, the Trojans have demonstrated their growth and dedication to the sport.
This year, Turner is sending its non-tumble team to the state competition, along with two individuals who will compete in the state finals. The team secured their spot by finishing in fourth place at the WACPC preliminary round, held at Hartford Union High School. The competition is scheduled to take place at DeForest High School on Saturday, with performances starting at 8 a.m.
Coach McLain expressed pride in her squad’s progress: “The girls have worked so hard to build a program that is built on character. It really shows that they are athletes, and it’s been amazing to see their passion grow throughout the community.”
Since cheerleading is not a sanctioned sport in Wisconsin, Turner competes through the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches (WACPC), which is recognized by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). The team competes in the medium division, and their non-tumble routine does not include advanced tumbling passes such as back handsprings.
The team’s dedication was particularly evident during their performance at Hartford, where the Trojans had to adjust to unexpected circumstances due to a snowstorm. Despite the challenges, the team pulled through with focus and determination, delivering a solid routine.
The team’s performance at other competitions, such as their third-place finish at the iCheer Championship and second-place finish at the Battle of the Bows, helped boost morale and set the stage for their state appearance. “Placing second was a really big moment for us,” said McLain. “They worked so hard and pushed their bodies to the extreme, and it really paid off.”
In addition to the team’s success, senior Kendall Tracy and junior Abigail Tahtinen will compete individually at state. Kendall has qualified in the tumble category, while Abigail will compete in limited tumbling. Both athletes are recognized for their leadership and dedication to the team.
The team’s mascot, Hector the Trojan, will also perform at state. Originally, Logan Tysee held the role, but due to scheduling conflicts, Kieran Flanagan will take on the mascot duties for the finals.
Looking ahead to the state finals, McLain is optimistic about her team’s chances: “We’re definitely contenders for top three. With these girls putting their minds to it, they can definitely do it.”
