Cheerleaders Celebrate Britain’s Got Talent Semi-Finals Appearance
December 22, 2024The Netflix series America’s Sweethearts has captured audiences worldwide, climbing the charts since its release. The show offers an inside look at the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC), often referred to as the most famous cheerleading squad in the US.
Behind the Glamour: Intense Training and Strict Standards
The series delves into the grueling audition and training process for DCC, revealing the physical and mental challenges faced by the cheerleaders. Hopefuls like 24-year-old Ariana McClure, a medical sales rep attempting to join the team for the second time, undergo a rigorous selection process. From acrobatic routines to maintaining specific body measurements, cheerleaders face immense pressure to meet exacting standards while exuding perfection on the field.
Dancers must stay fit enough to wear the iconic uniform of tiny shorts, a crop top, and cowboy boots. “It’s ruthlessly competitive,” Ariana admits, as she balances full-time work with hours of training, rehearsals, and fitness regimes.
A Legacy Revived by Netflix
While DCC had 16 seasons of reality TV on the CMT network, Netflix’s global platform has introduced the team to a broader audience. The series highlights not only the physical demands but also the financial disparities.
Cowboys executive Charlotte Jones acknowledges the low pay but emphasizes the intangible benefits of being part of the team. Ariana, however, believes compensation could still improve. “It’s a part-time job with a full-time schedule,” she says, noting the time required for practice, preparation, and personal fitness. “We do it because we love it, but it’s still a job and deserves fair pay.”
Mental Health: An Overlooked Challenge
America’s Sweethearts also sheds light on the mental health struggles cheerleaders face. Former team member Victoria Kalina openly discussed her battle with depression and eating disorders. Ariana praises her bravery and calls for more targeted support, such as sports therapists for cheerleaders.
“My therapist was great, but she wasn’t a dancer or athlete,” Ariana explains. “Having access to professionals who understand our unique challenges would be invaluable.”
The DCC organization responded, stating that cheerleaders, like players, have access to confidential support and a dedicated Mental Health and Wellness Consultant.
A Love for Dance, Despite the Demands
Despite the challenges, Ariana and her peers remain passionate about their roles. “We’d do it for free because we love it,” she says. “But at the end of the day, it’s a job, and we should be rewarded accordingly.”
Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts not only entertains but also sparks conversations about the realities of professional cheerleading. From physical demands to mental health awareness, the series highlights the strength, resilience, and dedication behind the dazzling smiles and high kicks of America’s most iconic cheerleaders.
