December 29, 2024The Unity Allstars Black cheerleading team is set to make history as they chase their third consecutive world championship title at Cheerleading Worlds, the sport’s most prestigious competition.
Based in south London, the team has already secured back-to-back victories and is now preparing for their “three-peat” this weekend in Florida—a term used in cheerleading to signify winning three times in a row.
While many still associate cheerleading with halftime performances at American sporting events, competitive cheerleading has grown into a dynamic and highly respected sport. In the UK, its popularity continues to soar.
At major tournaments like Cheerleading Worlds, teams battle it out with high-energy routines featuring complex acrobatics, intricate dance moves, and impressive tumbling skills, all aimed at impressing the judges.
Cheerleading Combines Athleticism and Showmanship
“My favorite part about cheer is the energy,” says Caitlin Pretious, one of Unity Allstars Black’s star athletes.
“Being an energetic person, it’s hard to find a sport that channels that energy. Cheerleading has been a blessing.”
Cheerleading, a performance-based sport, is known for its glittery uniforms, makeup, and emphasis on showmanship. But Caitlin believes these elements shouldn’t diminish its athletic credibility.
“Just because we wear sparkles and makeup doesn’t make it less athletic than gymnastics or acrobatics,” she explains. “People are literally being thrown above your head, and you’re catching them—it’s not easy. We just make it look effortless.”
A Sport for Everyone
Cheerleading isn’t just for women, as Unity Allstars Black athlete Matthew Delday proves. Competing at Worlds since 2011, Matthew emphasizes the dedication required to perform at an elite level.
“It takes a lot to compete at this standard,” he says, highlighting the rigorous training and teamwork involved in perfecting each routine.
Unity Allstars Black represents the best of UK cheerleading, combining skill, strength, and passion. With their eyes on a third world title, the team is ready to show the world why they’re at the top of their game.
