December 30, 2024Cheerleading is set to make its Olympic debut in 2028, but one UK-based team is already laying the groundwork for success. The Wolverines Cheer Academy in Basingstoke, which secured an impressive eighth-place finish at last year’s Cheerleading World Championships in Florida, is training harder than ever for the future.
Founded in 2014, the Wolverines Cheer Academy has grown exponentially and now boasts around 300 athletes, with participants ranging from just three years old to seasoned competitors.
In May of last year, approximately 40 Wolverines athletes traveled to Florida to compete in one of the sport’s most prestigious events. Their dedication and determination have firmly established the academy as one of the UK’s top cheerleading programs.
Young Athletes Shine in Competitive Cheerleading
For Jess, a 10-year-old athlete with past victories under her belt, the thrill of performing is unmatched.
“It’s an amazing feeling to win,” she shares. “When you step onto the floor, smoke rises, the crowd is cheering, and you feel like a superstar. I just love it.”
Her excitement highlights the electric atmosphere of competitive cheerleading, where routines combine athleticism, teamwork, and showmanship to captivate audiences and judges alike.
Cheerleading Recognized as an Olympic Sport
Cheerleading’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games follows its official recognition as a sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in July 2021. This milestone came after 12 years of relentless campaigning by the International Cheer Union.
With this recognition, the Wolverines and other cheerleading teams worldwide are seizing the opportunity to elevate the sport to new heights.
As the countdown to the Olympics begins, the Wolverines Cheer Academy is proving that their passion, talent, and dedication are second to none. They’re not just preparing for competitions—they’re preparing to represent the future of cheerleading on the world’s biggest stage.
