January 13, 2025The varsity cheer team from Community Christian School (CCS) started the year with an impressive victory, securing a national championship win at the prestigious National Christian Cheerleading Championships. Competing under the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders (FCC), the team excelled in two divisions: varsity game day and large varsity performance. They claimed first place in the varsity game day division and placed third in large varsity performance.
A Year of Hard Work Pays Off
Preparation for the competition began in May of the previous year. According to team captain Audrey Hollingsworth, the squad first showcased their routine during an FCC cheer camp over the summer. After securing a bid to nationals at camp, the team participated in a state-level competition before advancing to the national stage.
Reflecting on the journey, Hollingsworth said, “We placed fourth at state, which was a bit disappointing after all the effort we put in. That’s why placing so well at nationals feels incredibly special.”
Overcoming Challenges Before Nationals
The team’s road to nationals was not without obstacles. Head coach Ashley Vaughan revealed that a key senior captain suffered a foot injury just days before the competition, forcing the team to completely rework their routines. Despite the setback, the team’s resilience shone through as they held intense six-hour practices to adapt their performance.
“Winning was unexpected,” Vaughan admitted. “After the injury, we thought our chances of competing for the top spot were slim. To come out on top in the varsity game day division was an incredible achievement.”
A Memorable Experience in Orlando
The team traveled to Orlando on New Year’s Day, dedicating time to fine-tune their routines before taking the stage. The victory was particularly significant for CCS, as the school does not participate in nationals annually, making this year’s achievement all the more remarkable.
“Ending our competition season with such a high note made all the hours of hard work, both in the fall and summer, completely worth it,” said Vaughan.
Celebrating Success
The national championship win has become a source of pride for the CCS cheer team, showcasing their dedication, perseverance, and ability to overcome challenges. Their success at the National Christian Cheerleading Championships is a testament to the power of teamwork and determination, leaving an inspiring legacy for future CCS cheerleaders.
